TORONTO: Tulsi Tanti, known as the "wind man of India", has been conferred with a prestigious award here for his pioneering work globally to promote
non-conventional sources of energy.

Tanti, the founder of Pune-based Suzlon Energy which the world's fifth's largest supplier of wind turbines, received the CIF Chanchlani Global India award 2009, instituted by Canada India Foundation, from Montek Singh Ahluwalia, Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission of India.

"The award recognises his pioneering contribution towards the re-emergence of India on the global scene," Ahluwalia said congratulating 51-year-old Tanti.

"India's rich cultural heritage along with its leadership in science and technology enables it to offer innovative solutions to global challenge of carbon emissions and energy shortages. Suzlon is a case in point," he said.

Tanti was ranked by Forbes magazine as the 33rd richest man in India with a family wealth of $1.1 billion in 2008. His company sells products in as many as 21 countries.

Ahluwalia said: "Tulsi, Asia's largest maker of wind turbines, is seriously sizing up the Ontario market, after his success in Quebec, as a potential home for new manufacturing.

He said Tanti has put India on the forefront of global efforts to harness renewable sources of energy and his company commands over 10.5 per cent of the global market share.
